SAHARA NEWS - November 2001 - Numero 51
N° 51
EDITO

ATLANTIDE ORGANISATION Internationale would like to thank all the competitors in the DESERT CUP 2001 Jordan Telecom for placing theirtrust in us. It was clear from the very first contact between competitors and our Jordanian hosts, just how welcome we all were: it was no longer just a question of hosting a race.
This edition was particularly successful but one should remain modest and admit there's always room for improvement. Marco OLMO (I) embodies this state of mind when he trains and it would seem to pay off. Winning the race for the second consecutive time, he has placed the level of competition high.
The DESERT CUP is certainly a demanding race but providing you pace yourself well you don't have to be an extraterrestrial to finish. The delighted expressions of the last two competitors are proof enough of that. After only two editions, people already want to have the competition on their list of achievements. So for all those that dream of leaving their footprints on such a fabulous itinerary, here's to meeting up in November 2002.
In the meantime, from 05 April onwards, another caravan is preparing for an exceptional week on the 17th MARATHON DES SABLES. From those that enrol in the hope of finishing to those that are out to win, the course brings together all categories of competitor. But whatever the level, whether alone or in a team, everyone has to dig deep and find an energy they never dreamed they had. Many competitors say it's about fulfilling a dream. Being disappointed is therefore out of the question. So remember the MARATHON DES SABLES is a difficult race requiring really good pacing. Serious preparation is necessary in order to know what you're really capable of. In this type of race, if you want to get to the finish, it's better to underestimate yourself than the opposite.
There are still 4 months to fine-tune performance and test equipment. It will then be over to adventure and the chance to discover a marvellous country.
Good luck with the training and we'll be in touch soon.

TIMING DESERT CUP

How to beat Marco Olmo (I) ?
If you try and keep up with him you explode andif you let him get too far ahead you can never catch up.
S. AL AQRA from Jordan was less than 15' behind OLMO up to CP6, but from CP7 onwards the time gap increased to 1H10. Behind him was T. KUNNATH (Ger) then J-M JOLY (F), followed closely by E. FATTACCIOLI (F) and C. GINTER (F) who, as usual, set off cautiously. At CP8, J.M. JOLY broke away from his 3 followers who arrived neck and neck. The Frenchman ultimately closed in on the Jordanian but the latter gave a final push to cross the finish line 3 minutes ahead, though 1h20 behind the winner OLMO. The 3 followers finished in the same order as they went through CP8, having played cat and mouse for around 100kms. On the women's side, P. MARTIN (F) clocked in 1H30 before N. Firmin (F) at CP9. A second victory for MARTIN seemed on the cards but fatigue forced her to stop and sleep 5 hours at this CP. Same stop over for J.VILLETON (F), but for only 2H20' enabling her to leave 20' ahead of P. MARTIN. When the 2 women woke up at CP9, V. MOITIER (F) had just gone through and N. FIRMIN (F) had already left CP10. J. VILLETON later caught up with V. MOITIER, but P. MARTIN fell further behind, getting lost before CP10. The dice were then cast! Despite J. VILLETON putting in an admirable chase, N. FIRMIN was the first to cross the finish line, securing the Master 1 trophy as well. Master 2 trophy and 2nd place went to J. VILLETON with V. MOITIER taking a well-earned 3rd place.
In continuing despite it all, P. MARTIN allowed her team-mates D. LE MAUFF (F) and P. RENAULT (F) from Ar-Roazhoniz Soja Sun to win the team ranking, ahead of Gones Runners 1 and Jordan Team 1.

DESERT CUP

NEW RECORD
With a time of 21H 41'34'', Marco OLMO (I) last year established a record that seemed difficult to beat. But that would have meant forgetting how well he knows the race. Setting off more slowly than last year, he accelerated on nearing the mountains and made the most of clement weather conditions at the time he crossed the hilly section (no wind, not cold). His new record of 20H19'38'' brings us dangerously close to the 20H mark !

SOME LADY
Jocelyne VILLETON (F) has one of the finest records in French athletics but that doesn't stop her being moved to tears when we pay her homage. 2nd in the female ranking and 1st V2, she ran an intelligent race allowing her team Gones Runners 1 to secure 2nd place. Not bad considering it's her first Desert Cup Jordan Telecom.

19 SECONDS APART!

Just 19 seconds ahead of Jordan Telecom 1 team, the Gones Runners 1 scooped 2nd place in the team ranking. What's 19 seconds? 100 metres or so ? A shoelace you stop to tie up ? An object lost in the bottom of your bag ? It may sound like nothing but in sport it makes all the difference.

A GREAT TEAM!
We have to say a special word about the Jordanian and French volunteers who did so much to ensure the race went off well. Sometimes at their posts for the full three days in far from easy conditions, they carried out their duties enthusiastically and with a smile. Bravo and thanks to you all !

MARATHON DES SABLES

SOME WELL KNOWN FACES
Traditionally accompanied by her husband Pascal, Monique FRUSSOTTE (F) is part of MDS history just like J.P. DAVIOT (F). Monique won the race in 91 and 92 and finished 2nd in 90 and 93. As for Jean-Pierre, he stood out from 91 to 94 finishing 3 times in 4th place and once in fifth. They're back for the fun of it all, but don't be fooled - they're real competitors.

BAKER'S DAUGHTER

With those 2 baguettes characteristically attached to his rucksack, J.L. GAUVRIT (F) comes back to see us every two years. For this 5th participation, he's joined by his daughter Mathilde. Aged 16, she may well turn out to be the youngest in the race.

WATCH OUT !
With a record marathon time of 2H19' J. COUSIN (F) will be giving a few people a run for their money. M. IGUIDER (F) also looks full of promise having already won a race in stages in Morocco and A. AUBRION (F) is hoping to finish amongst the winners following victories in Oman and Nepal.

TEAM ENROLMENTS
ALCF : P. ARAGON (F), A. ABDELMALEK (F) and L. LE FLOCH (F) will no doubt be extra motivated in pushing themselves to the limit now they've got Lège Cap Ferret village school involved in their adventure.
2eRégiment du Génie de Metz (Metz Engineers Corps): For O. BOISSINOT (F), S. DELMAS (F), J. PAILLE (F) and; M. GRASMUCK (F), the MDS is mythic: these 4 soldiers are drawn by the beauty of the desert and can't wait to see how they fare in such an environment.
Mucoviscidose Rotary Rennais 1: The 4 French marathon runners F. CARRE, T. DANJOU, B. HERUBEL and J.P. LEGENDRE are coming to put this very human experience to a good cause (cystic fibrosis).
Mucoviscidose Rotary Rennais 2 : G. CLOTEAUX (F), Y. MARCHAND (F), G. LEGENDRE (F) and J.Y. LEMETAYER (F) have a strong sense of team spirit and like their comrades, they're running to give hope to those who can't.
Vienne Biathlon : following a good performance in 99, C. PARADOT (F) is returning with M. PAINAULT-LACOUR (F), Y. JALLAIS (F) and D.MAITRE (F). They've already started collecting money for the association "De l'eau pour le désert".
Gemplus : C. COULIER, M. LEPLATOIS, L. JEAN and G. VICENTE are in it for the challenge. What counts for these 4 French engineers are the values of sharing and sticking together in the face of exertion.
Confetti : A. LOISON (F) finished well on the 11th MDS in 28th place. With this experience behind him, he's back with 2 good runners D. PAPA (F) and J.P. KRUGER (F): they've been dreaming of it for some time.
